ARMOR: The Sword

Updated: Aug 11, 2023

“And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God;”

Ephesians 6:17

The Word of God is scripture. Scripture is God’s words. When we abide in Jesus we are so connected to Him, we become one with Him. His word tells us we have the mind of Christ.

When we receive Holy Spirit, He reveals the Father's heart to us. Which is confirmed through revelation from the word, scripture.

We want to know God. To renew our minds to have the mind of Christ. To be able to defend ourselves with the sword of the Spirit. So we need to practice reading our bibles. More than just that, we need to invite Holy Spirit into our minds and our time with God and ask Him to reveal what His word means.

Have you ever read a passage of scripture and left feeling puzzled and confused? It’s likely this scripture is the very puzzle piece you’ve been looking for but you can’t quite see how it fits.

Ask Holy Spirit to show you what His heart is about this scripture. He will answer! This is a huge key that we need in order to properly wear the full armor of God. We need both His word and Holy Spirit to fight our enemy. Most of the battle is in our thought life. Which is why the Ephesians 6 armor description ends with the helmet and the sword.

There are too many scriptures to list about renewing our mind and having the mind of Christ but that should tell you just how important it is to God that we are protected. He gives us the tools we need and the will and independence to utilize those tools. The choice is ours.

He is inviting us to know and experience Him in intimate and beautiful ways here on this side of eternity, and for the rest of eternity.

"For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart." Hebrews 4:12

Holy Spirit and the word of God together is the sword of the Spirit. If you pray in tongues I encourage you to pray before and even while you’re reading scripture. The word tells us the Spirit prays through us what we don’t know what or how to pray. If you don’t have this gift but you want it, ask the Lord. He also says that anyone who asks of Him it will be given to them.

“Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.” Romans 8:26

“What is the conclusion then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will also pray with the understanding. I will sing with the spirit, and I will also sing with the understanding.” I Corinthians 14:15

“and be renewed in the spirit of your mind,” Ephesians 4:23
